Backaches are one of the most common causes for absenteeism from work. Pain in the back is said to generally heal without treatment, but it also tends to recur. Bending the knees to lift objects is yet one more bit of advice which has nothing to do with resolving the true causes of back pain. Most back pain, in fact, does not even come from the spinal column or muscles in the back. Some back pain experts may prescribe drinking more water to hydrate these areas. Drinking lots and lots of water, however, has nothing to do with the water actually getting into the spinal column vertebral spaces. Most likely the water will not even reach the vertebral spaces but will instead go into the intestines to relieve the pressure there. That pressure is most likely the cause of the back pain. Lack of water in the intestine is not the core issue, however. What causes the lack of water in the intestine is the core issue. Irritable bowel, constipation and other intestinal problems cause additional back pain. Both drugs and nutritional supplements mask your symptoms. Your pain may not even be biochemical, so to depend on biochemical solutions will not resolve the cause of your pain. For quite a few years now, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), a division of the Department of Health and Human Services, has released a study with findings that medical treatments for back pain are not as effective as chiropractic care. The U.S. Government has recommended chiropractic treatment as the first line of therapy for back pain. The AHCPR study and report is a wake up call to managed care in general, and to government's managed carriers, that there are less expensive and safer methods for dealing with back pain.
